Hints for Outdoor Christmas Decorating

  • December 10, 2018

With Christmas quickly approaching, outdoor decorations are popping up all around. Here are a few hints to keep you and your lawn safe this winter.

  1. If you choose to use large, heavy decorations in your design, make sure they aren’t sitting in the same spot on your grass for more than a week or two. Otherwise, they can damage the grass underneath.
  2. Make sure your lights are rated as outdoor lights. This information should be clearly written on the box of lights.
  3. Timers can be a great investment. It not only makes things simpler for you, but it also keeps you from having excessive foot traffic on your lawn from turning the lights on and off.
  4. Make sure that you securely anchor all decorations so that the wind or a pet doesn’t knock them over.
  5. If you need to use a ladder or step stool when installing your lights, be careful and safe. Better yet, if possible, have a friend or family member help steady the ladder. The last thing you want to do is show up for Christmas dinner with broken bones!

We all want a nice looking lawn, and although it’s not fun to talk about lawn diseases, it is an important thing to address if you want the best looking lawn on the block. Here is a common lawn condition and what to do to fix it.

Brown Patch

Characteristics: This disease looks just like the name suggests. It is a small brown spot that continues to grow in size. Brown Patch is a soil-born fungus that spreads easily in areas with high humidity. It can affect almost any type of turf grass.
Symptoms: The lawn will start having circular brown spots that increase in size with a ring of yellow or wilted grass around the outside. It spreads the fastest when the temperature is over 85 degrees during the day and over 70 degrees at night.
Treatment: Fertilizing regularly with plenty of nitrogen can help keep brown spots from developing as will making sure you aerate your lawn annually. Some fungicides can be used if the problem persists.

Speak to your lawn care technician if you feel like your lawn has this problem. We will be able to help you figure out the best treatment for your lawn.

Four Reasons to Hire Someone Else to Take Care of Your Lawn

Have you always thought it would be nice to have someone else cut your grass, but feel like it is a waste of money? Here are 4 reasons why it might actually make sense to hire someone else to care for your lawn and yard:

  • You have more time to spend with your family doing the things you enjoy – Chances are you can think of several things you’d rather be doing than mowing your grass on a hot, humid weekend afternoon. For those that work long hours during the week, family time can be hard to come by and maintaining your lawn is just something else that needs to be done during your well-deserved time off. Why not let someone else take care of your lawn? It will free you up to do more enjoyable things with those who matter the most to you.
  • You do not have to invest in expensive equipment – A basic, low-end riding mower for a small yard costs approximately $1500. Add in a trimmer for $100 and a blower for $150 and you’ll be paying a minimum of $1750 for start-up costs. Don’t forget yearly costs for gas, repairs, and maintenance (oil changes, blade sharpening, etc.). Labor and parts for repairs can be added expenses. Plus, you have to have a secure place to store your equipment. You may not be saving as much as you think you are by doing it yourself.
  • You can be safer – Your safety probably is not the first thing you think of when mowing your grass, but did you know over 80,000 people go to the ER each year for lawn care related accidents? Chances are, you won’t have a serious accident mowing your grass, but if you are getting older, all that moving and twisting required when doing your own lawn care is not only tiring, but can leave your back and body hurting.
  • You will have a better looking lawn – You probably are not a lawn care expert, but your lawn care technician is, and he can make sure that your lawn displays its best. Your lawn care professional will be able to spot potential problems and get them taken care of immediately – usually before you would even notice the problem.

Do any or all of these reasons sound appealing? If so, call us at 864-236-4071 or message us for a no-pressure quote. You may be surprised how affordable lawn care services really are!

grass and lime Photo: imaginaryhumanDid you know fall leaves create an acidic environment for your grass?

Weeds love this and thrive on the improper ph balance lawns receive from winter neglect. If you want a deep luscious green lawn that will impress your neighbors, you need to ask us about lime applications today!

Not only will this improve the strength and weed resistance, but it will also add more nutrients that the soil needs to keep grass healthy into the summer.

We can make your lawn so great it will make your neighbors green with envy!

Fall Leaves on Grass

Why is leaf cleanup beneficial to your lawn?

Fall Leaves on GrassCleaning up the leaves in your front yard is the best thing you can do for the health of your fescue grass. Too many leaves blocks sunlight and reduces water evaporation which can cause fungus and mold to grow on the fescue grass underneath. Although fescue grass is very tough, if the leaves are cleaned up too late it could be very damaging because the grass might not recover from the mold and fungus that has grown onto it.

Leaving wet, old, rotting leaves (which also attracts mosquitoes) on the grass may leave you re-planting seeds in the springtime. Fescue grass is already known to need to be re-planted in the fall from the stress the sun had caused it in the summer.

Feel free to contact us if you’re in need of a lawn clean up!

Tips For A Healthy Summer Lawn In Taylors South Carolina

Well Landscaped path. Photo: Max PixelEveryone wants a beautiful lawn that is the envy of the neighborhood, but a lot of people do not know how to get that beautiful, lush, healthy, green lawn during the warm summer months. It is actually not as hard as many people would think. If you follow these simple steps along with proper spring lawn care maintenance you can have a beautiful lawn this year.

First make sure your watering your lawn properly. Watering your lawn is a huge part of summer lawn care simply because for the most part it is the time of the year your lawn gets the least amount of water from rain. Normally you want to make sure your lawn is getting at least 1-1.5 inches of water including rainfall. During summer months this number sometimes needs to be adjusted a little higher, so look at your lawn and if you notice it is starting to yellow give it a little more water,1.5-1.75″ should do the trick, but make sure not to over water the lawn either. It is also best to water your lawn in one bigger session than spreading it out all week long. You will want to water before 10 a.m. You can also water at night when it is cooler, however it is best to water in the mornings because watering at night promotes fungus and disease in lawns.

Second the height of mowing your lawn play a big role in the health of your lawn. When mowing your lawn during the summer months mow it a little higher than you normally would. The reason you will want to mow the grass a little higher is to protect the roots from the heat of the sun. Although sun is important to the growth and health of your lawn it is also a big factor in the “burning”, or yellowing “dead” effect many lawns suffer from during the summer. I suggest leaving your lawn at least 3-3.5″ high. You may need to mow your lawn higher than that even sometimes as high as 4″ depending on the grass type, and the heat of the sun.

The third thing you will want to do is mow your lawn less frequently. During the summer months you generally want to mow your lawn less then you do in the spring and fall months. You will at most want to mow your lawn once every other week during the summer.

Finally, keep your lawn mowers blades sharp. You always want to have sharp blades when mowing your lawn so that you actually get a good clean even cut. Dull blades do not really cut the grass they tear it. You want you want to keep your blades sharp year round, as it is important to cut the lawn instead of tear it. Tearing the lawn leaves it more open to diseases.
