Spring Lawn

Is your yard ready for spring? Here are some quick tips to make sure your lawn is looking its best this spring.

Clean up your yard – Chances are over winter your bushes and hedges have started looking a bit untidy. Now is the time to get them trimmed back before they start to grow. Remove fallen sticks and branches and clean up any remaining leaves so that the fresh green grass can grow nicely in your yard.

Apply fresh mulch or pine straw – Mulching has many great benefits for your flower beds: a generous application helps block weeds from growing through the mulch barrier, it helps the soil retain moisture during any dry times during the spring and summer, and it also adds important nutrients to the soil. Besides these practical benefits, mulching gives your yard a nice finished look.

Check your sprinkler system – Now is the time to make sure that your sprinkler system is working properly. Turn it on and make sure that there are no leaks in the water lines. If you see any water pooling or bubbling in the grass you may have a break. Check the sprinkler heads and nozzles. Sometimes they get buried or blocked in the grass and ground. It’s also a good time to replace the batteries in your controller.

Overseed, fertilize, aerate, or apply a pre-emergent based upon your specific lawn – If you have any bare spots in your yard or want to make your current grass thicker or greener, overseeding is a good idea. Another way to green up your grass is by applying a fertilizer in the early spring just when the grass begins to grow. Aeration is when little plugs of dirt are removed from the soil. This has many benefits including reduced water runoff, thatch breakdown, and keeps your grass from getting as stressed during hot and dry times during the summer. A pre-emergent help weeds from sprouting and growing in your yard. Knowing what treatment or combination of treatments is best for your yard can be a bit tricky. Give Nichols Lawn Services a call and one of our lawn care technicians will recommend what’s best for your yard and it get it taken care of for you.

Plant some fresh flowers – Flowers are an instant and inexpensive way to make your yard look like spring. You can really use your creativity by choosing different colors, heights, and textures. Just make sure to pay attention what amount of sunshine or shade the flower prefers and place them in your yard accordingly.

Nichols Lawn Services can help you with any or all of these items. Give us a call at 864-236-4071 or send us a message at NicholsLawnServices.com and we’d be happy to help you get your lawn looking top notch for spring.

Hints for Outdoor Christmas Decorating

With Christmas quickly approaching, outdoor decorations are popping up all around. Here are a few hints to keep you and your lawn safe this winter.

  1. If you choose to use large, heavy decorations in your design, make sure they aren’t sitting in the same spot on your grass for more than a week or two. Otherwise, they can damage the grass underneath.
  2. Make sure your lights are rated as outdoor lights. This information should be clearly written on the box of lights.
  3. Timers can be a great investment. It not only makes things simpler for you, but it also keeps you from having excessive foot traffic on your lawn from turning the lights on and off.
  4. Make sure that you securely anchor all decorations so that the wind or a pet doesn’t knock them over.
  5. If you need to use a ladder or step stool when installing your lights, be careful and safe. Better yet, if possible, have a friend or family member help steady the ladder. The last thing you want to do is show up for Christmas dinner with broken bones!

Fall Outdoor Check-List – Lawn Aeration

Once you’ve taken care of your gutter cleaning and are on top of leaf clean-up, consider having your lawn aerated in the fall. Here is some information about lawn aeration to consider.

What is lawn aeration?

Aerating your lawn includes poking small holes in the soil so that water, air, and nutrients are able to penetrate deep into the soil. The most effective method of aeration takes small plugs of soil out of the ground.

What types of lawns need aeration?

Lawns that get lots of traffic.
Lawns of newly constructed homes – the construction traffic often packs the soil and some of the topsoil ends up being removed.
Lawns that were established by sod.
Lawns that feels spongy or dry out easily.

What are the benefits of aerating your lawn?

A few of the benefits of lawn aeration is that water is able to soak into the soil instead of puddling or running off your lawn. Fertilizer and air can also reach the grass roots causing the grass to grow better. Because it helps eliminate thatch build-up, your lawn will look better. Good soil aeration will help your grass during hot and dry times during the year.

How often should my lawn be aerated?

Typically once or twice a year is sufficient. We can help you choose the best time to have this done as well as the frequency based upon your specific lawn.

Fall Outdoor Check-List: Leaves

Who doesn’t like looking at the beautiful contrast of fall leaves? The red, orange, and yellows make our ordinary commutes to work much more pleasurable. However, as those crisp leaves begin to fall, it creates a problem in our yards. What are we supposed to do with all of those leaves? If you do clean them up, then the wind blows and more fall to the ground. Here are some ideas for leaf clean-up.

Bagging – Bagging leaves while you mow is a great way to remove them from your yard. If you don’t have a bagger for your mower, or don’t have a good way to get rid of the leaves, consider hiring a lawn care company to take care of it for you. They will remove the leaves, unless you request differently, making things simple for you.

Mowing – mowing over the leaves will shred them into small pieces adding important nutrients to your yard. The leaf bits will disappear during the winter, but if you have too many leaves it can damage your grass and chopped leaves in your yard can be unsightly.

Raking – Have a leaf raking party! It’s great exercise, and if you have kids or grand kids it’s a good family activity to do together. Raking works the best if you have a small yard. Trying to keep up with raking leaves in a big yard can be almost impossible. Of course, if your health or schedule don’t allow you to rake leaves, hire a lawn care company to take care of it for you. You don’t want to have the yard on the block that all the neighbors dislike because they know your collection of leaves will blow into their yard.

Tarps – Laying large tarps under your big trees can help keep you on top of the falling leaves. As the leaves fall, the tarps will catch the leaves and it is easier to grab the corners of the tarp to move the leaves than it is to rake and put them into bags. It is important to note that you don’t want to leave the tarp in one spot for more than a day or two as it will damage the grass underneath.

Three Reasons To Clean Your Gutters In The Fall

Fall is a great time to have your gutters cleaned. Leaves begin falling, clogging the gutters. Debris from the summer builds-up, keeping rain water from running through freely. This can cause some big problems – both now and in the future.

Here are 3 reasons to clean your gutters in the fall.

    1. It prevents damage to your foundation – Gutters are designed to move the water from the roof to an area away from your house and foundation. If the water isn’t able to drain properly through the gutters, it will soak into the ground next to your foundation and over time this can cause some very expensive problems: The foundation can crack, water may leak into your basement, and it can also cause mold and areas of rot.

    1. It helps you avoid roof damage – water that pools on the roof because it can’t drain through the gutters properly can cause damage to the fascia as well as roof damage because the water can get backed up under the shingles.

  1. It helps keep mosquitoes away – insects, like mosquitoes, love standing, stale water and clogged gutters are full of just that. To avoid attracting flies and mosquitoes is a great reason to make sure you keep your gutters cleaned.Give us a call at 864-236-4071 or send us a message if you’d like to have a quote for gutter cleaning. Nichols Lawn Services is fully insured and qualified to do the job! It’s a small amount to pay now and can add up to big savings later by avoiding larger and more expensive issues.

Stinging Insects in Your Yard – Part 2

Part 2 of Stinging Insects in your Yard is all about paper wasps, yellow jackets, and baldfaced hornets. These creatures are also important for pollination, just like bees and can also help with pest control in your garden and yard. However, they can also be very dangerous if you stumble into one of their nests. Here are some facts about these stinging creatures.

Paper WaspsPaper Wasps: Paper wasps can be red, brown, or black. They grow to about 3/4ths of an inch long and like to eat nectar and take caterpillars to feed their young. Paper Wasps form a papery nest that looks like an upside down umbrella. They are very protective of their nest and will attack if they feel it is being threatened. They often build their nests under the eaves of a building which can be dangerous to humans.

Yellow JacketsYellow Jackets: Yellow jackets are yellow and black and have a very small waist. They also feed on nectar and fruit just like paper wasps but also hunt insects to feed the growing larvae. Many times they live in an abandoned rodent hole in the ground, but they may also hang their nests from trees, bushes, or under eaves. The nests can be the size of a basketball. Their stings are very painful and they can sting you multiple times. Although they don’t aggressively seek you out to sting you, they are very protective of their nest and are very sensitive to sound and vibrations so mowers or other loud equipment close to their home can upset them.

Baldfaced Hornets

Baldfaced Hornets: Baldfaced Hornets are black with a white face. They grow to nearly an inch long and are bigger than yellow jackets. They are only a hornet by name and are in the same family as yellow jackets. They usually make their nests hanging from trees or an area with lots of foliage, but they can also build their nest in siding or under the eaves of a building. Baldfaced Hornets, like other stinging creatures, will attack if they feel threatened especially if you get too close to their nests. They can sting multiple times and any loud sounds or vibrations can upset them causing them to attack.

Stinging Insects in Your Yard – Part 1

What is your first reaction when you hear a buzzing insect flying around your head on a warm summer’s day? Do you run the other way? Do you try to kill it? Or do you just ignore it hoping it won’t sting you? Whatever your reaction, it’s important to know what creatures are in your yard and what to do with them. First, you’ll want to identify the insect and second, you’ll need find out if their nest is in your yard (so you can avoid getting in their space and so you can stay sting free). It’s one thing to have an occasional bumble bee flying through your yard pollinating your flowers and a completely different thing having a hive of hornets above your front door.
First, we will take a look at the typically good stinging creatures: bees. We need bees! They pollinate plants and flowers and are necessary to make food grow. Here is info about 3 common types of bees.

  • Bumble BeeBumble Bees: Bumble Bees almost always make their home in the ground, typically in an abandoned rodent hole. They are larger than the other bees and have a hairy belly. It is only the females that sting and since they aren’t that aggressive, unless you disturb their home you should get along fine with them in your yard. Unlike honey bees, they can sting you multiple times and if they are threatened they can chase you quite a ways, so if you find a nest in a high traffic area, it would be best to consult a pest control company to help you get rid of them. If their nest is no threat to you, leave them be!

  • Honey Bees: Honey Bees are smaller than Bumble Bees. A hollow tree or in a location around rocks are a couple of Honey Beeplaces that honey bees may call home. They move in a way that looks like dancing to communicate to their fellow bees about where food is. Honey Bees produce honey as their name suggests, and store it in a structure of hexagonal cells of wax, called honeycomb. As with bumble bees, if a honey bee feels threatened, or something or someone gets too close to their nest, they will attack. Honey bees can only sting once and will die soon afterward.

  • Carpenter BeeCarpenter Bees: Carpenter Bees are different than honey or bumble bees in that they don’t live in a hive and are not social bees. Many people get them confused with bumble bees, but they are smaller and don’t have a hairy belly. The female bee bores a hole in wood to lay her eggs so they are typically found in trees or areas of a home or yard with untreated wood. The males don’t sting, and the females rarely do so they don’t pose much of a risk to humans. However, they can cause damage to buildings or wood structures over time. So for that reason, they may need to be removed from your property.

Cinch Bugs

3 Common Lawn Pests To Look Out For

Lawn Pests

Summer is the perfect time to make happy memories with your family and friends in your backyard. The weather’s warm, there’s plenty of sun, but there are also numerous pests that love to take over your lawn. You can’t always see them – unless you investigate closely, but you can sure see the damage they leave behind.

Here are 3 common lawn pests to look out for:
Cinch Bugs

Cinch Bugs
Cinch Bugs

Cinch bugs are ant-sized. Although they can cause problems all summer long, July and August are when they do the most damage. If your lawn has an infestation of this particular insect, you will see the grass start to have yellow patches that turn to brown. To get rid of them, use an insecticide that’s labeled to eliminate cinch bugs.

Sod webworms
Sod webworms

Sod webworms are actually caterpillars from the larva of grey or tan moths. So, although it may be concerning if you begin to see multiple moths in your yard, you don’t want to treat the moths because they aren’t the ones that do the damage. It is the caterpillars that are the culprits. They feed on the grass making baseball-size brown patches in your lawn. You may even see evidence of silken tunnels. Once you spot this damage, it’s time to treat for them quickly.

White Grubs
White Grubs

White Grubs. These pests come from the larva of June bugs. They like to feed off of turf grass right at the root because that’s where they live – just below the surface of your lawn in the soil. If your lawn has too many white grubs in one area it will turn brown. In addition, that area may attract an overabundance of birds because the grub is a tasty meal for them.

Knowing what lawn pests are causing your lawn not to look its best can be difficult. Let your lawn care technician know any areas of concern and they will be able to help you figure out which lawn pest is causing the damage and how to treat the problem.
